This phygital project draws inspiration from shields depicted on red-figure Attic vases from the 5th century BC. Over 1,000 unique symbols have been analyzed using the Beazley Archive Pottery Database at the Classical Art Research Centre, University of Oxford. Keramos Labs digitally recreated and categorized according to their historical rarity and frequency of appearance.
A semantic analysis was then applied to decode the deeper meanings of each symbol, associating it with three keywords that capture its essence.
Each symbol is embodied in a handcrafted clay medallion. Embedded within every medallion is a chip that links directly to its symbolic decoding, allowing owners to explore the ancient significance through a simple tap on their device.
This collection revives forgotten emblems of antiquity, blending scholarly research, contemporary craftsmanship, and interactivity into tangible pieces of history.
